Teachers are often celebrated during the first full week of May each year. This special day has a long history that brings this celebration to the forefront in our community. In 1944, leaders in politics and education discussed the need for a national day to honor teachers. In 1953, Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day. Finally, in 1980, Congress declared National Teacher Day, which was later changed by the National Education Association to the first full week of May to honor these dedicated professionals.
This date is chosen in honor of the birthday of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910). As many are aware, she is known for founding the nursing profession during the Crimean War (1853-1856). An interesting fact is that she became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” due to her habit of making her rounds at night when others were not around.
