  • What is your name?
    • Margaret Sharenko
  • How long have you known that you wanted to be a massage therapist?
    • Since I was 16
  • How did you first get your toes wet in the massage field?
    • I used to massage my family starting at 10
  • Where did you go to school for massage?
    • Atlanta School of Massage
  • How long have you been an instructor/working at Atlanta School of Massage?
    • 5 years
  • What is your favorite class/module and why?
    • Orthopedics, I love observing the biomechanics of the human body.
  • What is your favorite aspect of being an instructor?
    • I love sharing my passion and excitement for massage with my students. My favorite part is the ah-ha moment that students have when they finally understand a concept in their own time.
  • What was the best advice you ever received when you were in school?
    • You cannot help others if you do not take care of yourself first.
  • What do you think is the most important thing for students going into the massage industry to remember today?
    • Massage is a rewarding career. It is also a physically demanding profession. You can have a long and prosperous career as a MT by taking care of yourself on a consistent basis.
  • Why do you think ASM is the place for people seriously considering going into the massage industry to get their foundation?
    • I personally, chose ASM as my school of choice 2 different times in my life. The first time was for massage in 2005 and the second was for the personal trainer program in 2014. Some of my favorites memories and experiences took place at this school and I honestly believe I would not be where I am today in my career without the support I received during my time at ASM. That probably explains why I came back to teach and now have the pleasure of serving our students and graduates as the director.
  • What makes you passionate about this field?
    • The advancements in the field of massage are endless. With our partnership with Emory University we are seeing and publishing the positive biological effects massage has on populations. I am excited about the future of Massage Therapy and Research!
  • What is the most important thing for massage therapists to remember even after they are licensed and certified?
    • Get massages regularly. Trading out with colleagues is good but when you need to make sure you take care of yourself consistently set up a time weekly or biweekly and pay to receive massage services. It creates a healthy boundary for you. Attend GA Massage board meetings. Become active in the profession!
  • What is one common misconception about the field?
    • That massage is a luxury. Massage is a necessity for ones self care routine. Massage Therapists are here to support your wellness goals-the clients have to be ready to put themselves first!
